In Karachi, wheat and flour became expensive daily, causing the prices to reach an all-time high.
For the first time in the history of Karachi, mill flour has reached the level of Rs 150, fine Rs 1,40, and wheat Rs 125 per kg, while the government's writ is nowhere to be seen.
Chairman Karachi Wholesale Grocers Association Abdul Rauf Ibrahim says that in just 4 days of the new year, the price of wheat and flour has increased by 20 rupees per kg.
Traders say that the owners of flour mills are selling most of the flour to Afghan dealers who give them exorbitant prices for the flour. According to a milled flour dealer, the higher price has also affected flour sales. Buyers are buying less flour than usual.
Flour mill owners say that the flour crisis is becoming acute due to two months left for the new crop, including insufficient wheat stocks, floods and not taking timely government measures.
Traders involved in the flour trade believe that the Flour mills mafia is gobbling up thousands of tonnes of cheap wheat quota. In a city with a population of 3 crores, flour mills are selling cheap wheat flour to the public at a few counting places with the connivance of the food department, which should be taken notice of immediately.
