Reduction in tax payments

The poorest MPs

Tax not paid
Official records show that dozens of MPs were either not paying income tax or were not registered with the tax authorities. Out of 1,170 legislators, 161 MPs had not submitted income tax returns.
According to the report, the assets of more than two dozen women MPs were linked to their millionaire husbands but surprisingly they were not registered as regular taxpayers with the authorities.
About two dozen women MPs had assets worth a total of Rs 100 million but were not even registered with the tax authorities. More than 37 MPs who were not registered with FBR had declared assets of more than Rs 101 million.
The ECP and FBR also sent notices to 70 MLAs, whose assets were found to have abnormally increased or there were some serious discrepancies in their declarations.
According to the documents, about 98 MPs have total assets of Rs 37 billion while 12 of them have assets of more than Rs 500 million but were not active taxpayers.

Former Secretary Election Commission Kanwar Dilshad says that under the new election rules, the political finance wing of the Election Commission is bound to check the assets of all parliamentarians. According to Kanwar Dilshad, if a Member of Parliament fails to clarify his position, his case under Article 220 of the Election Commission is transferred to NAB so that he can find out about assets beyond known sources.
